The Background
Camara Arts represents the evolution of a life long dream of founder Angela Watson who throughout her life has been interested in art, music and dance. Recognizing early that people are at their best when expressing the art that is naturally in them Angela set out on a world journey to discover herself. As her journey unfolded it brought her in contact with many special people with great gifts to contribute through the nature of their spirits and the dynamics of their art forms. A strong desire to bring this type of Cultural Wealth to all people and particularly those of the african diaspora gave birth to the Camara Arts Organization.
History: Camara Arts is in its early formative stages, founded by Angela Watson in 2002. Camara Arts participated in joint projects with Tyhimba, drumming ensemble in teaching and presenting at the Black Women's Art's Festival of 2005, Intercultural Festival, the convention centers African American Extravaganza, had its first trip to Africa tour with one participant in April of 2003 as a first bench mark to establish our organization. Our focus now is to develop a Rites of Passage programming that produces real change for participants.
For the past year between 2006 & 2007 our outreach has been limited due to limited staff and the director's personal hardhips. Last year we focused on providing technical assistance to individuals and groups such as Kulu Mele, choreographing & teaching African dance as a part of the "Emancipation of a Soul" show for Joslyn Ladlyn, continuing the beginning stages of the production of an educational film about African dance, planning and research for trips and travel program in Africa, developing our board, and bringing in two consultants to assist with our marketing strategies as well as strategic planning for our program development.
